Living Forests: Restoring Forests, Empowering Communities
The Living Forests project empowers rural youth and women in Macate District, Mozambique, to restore degraded family forests and build sustainable livelihoods. The initiative supports 79 families through training in sustainable forestry, agroforestry, beekeeping, composting, and soil conservation.
Living Forests is a community-based environmental restoration and livelihood initiative implemented by the Youth Alliance for Sustainable Forests (AJFS) in Macate District, Manica Province, Mozambique.
The project was created to address increasing deforestation, land degradation, biodiversity loss, and economic vulnerability affecting rural communities. Through an integrated approach that combines forest restoration, sustainable livelihoods, environmental education, and community participation, Living Forests empowers local people to become active stewards of their natural resources.
The initiative places particular emphasis on youth and women, recognizing their critical role in environmental conservation and community development.
For many years, rural communities in Macate District have depended on charcoal production, slash-and-burn agriculture, and unsustainable natural resource extraction to support their livelihoods.
These practices have contributed to:
Rapid forest degradation
Soil erosion and declining agricultural productivity
Loss of biodiversity
Reduced resilience to climate change
Limited income opportunities for rural households
Increased poverty and environmental vulnerability
Without intervention, these pressures threaten both local ecosystems and the long-term well-being of communities.
Living Forests promotes a practical and community-driven model for sustainable development.
The project combines:
Training families in forest restoration, sustainable forest management, natural regeneration, and conservation practices.
Introducing integrated land-use systems that improve soil health, increase productivity, and reduce pressure on natural forests.
Providing beehives and training to create alternative income sources while encouraging forest protection.
Promoting composting, erosion control measures, and regenerative land management practices.
Strengthening local leadership structures and improving participation in natural resource management.
Supporting the active participation of women, including widows and vulnerable households, in leadership and decision-making processes.
Country: Mozambique, Province: Manica, District: Macate
Communities: Mugageia, Muconde and Canhenza
These rural communities depend heavily on natural resources and are highly vulnerable to environmental degradation and climate-related challenges.
Living Forests directly supported:
79 rural households
Approximately 395 direct beneficiaries
More than 500 indirect beneficiaries
Target groups include:
Youth
Women
Widows
Smallholder farmers
Community forest users
Local natural resource management committees
Families received practical training in:
Sustainable forestry, Agroforestry, Beekeeping, Composting, Soil conservation, Climate resilience and Natural resource governance.
A community nursery with a production capacity of 7,000 seedlings was established to support forest restoration and landscape recovery.
The nursery produces both native and fruit tree species that contribute to biodiversity conservation and household resilience.
Each participating family received a horizontal beehive and technical training.
This activity promotes:
Alternative income generation
Forest conservation
Pollinator protection
Sustainable use of natural resources
The project supported the establishment and strengthening of a Community Natural Resources Management Committee with legal recognition.
This structure enables communities to actively participate in environmental decision-making and forest protection.
79 families trained directly
Approximately 395 direct beneficiaries
More than 500 indirect beneficiaries
7,000-seedling community nursery established
79 beehives distributed and operational
10 nature-based microenterprises created
Women occupy more than 25% of leadership positions
99.6% budget execution rate achieved
Restoration of degraded land
Increased forest regeneration
Improved biodiversity protection
Enhanced soil conservation
Reduced pressure on natural forests
New income opportunities through honey production
Diversified livelihoods
Reduced dependence on environmentally harmful activities
Improved household resilience
Stronger community participation
Increased youth engagement
Greater gender inclusion
Enhanced local leadership
Improved cooperation among community members
Living Forests is not only restoring ecosystems; it is transforming lives.
Women such as Lúcia have increased their income through sustainable livelihood activities while becoming active participants in forest conservation.
Young community leaders such as Bocaz are now helping mobilize others to protect natural resources and promote sustainable development.
These examples demonstrate how environmental restoration can create lasting social and economic benefits.
Design thinking played an important role throughout the project.
The community nursery was designed to maximize space efficiency, water access, and seedling survival rates.
Horizontal beehives were selected and adapted as low-cost technologies suited to local conditions and skills.
Participatory planning methods ensured that solutions reflected community needs and priorities.
AJFS developed visual communication materials, training resources, and community monitoring tools to improve engagement and learning.
Living Forests was designed to create long-term impact beyond project funding.
Sustainability is supported through:
Community ownership
Local leadership structures
Income generation from honey production
Ongoing use of the nursery
Forest stewardship by participating families
Replication potential in other communities
The project demonstrates that environmental conservation and community development can be achieved together through locally driven and inclusive approaches.
The Youth Alliance for Sustainable Forests (AJFS) is a Mozambican non-profit organization dedicated to environmental conservation, youth empowerment, sustainable livelihoods, climate resilience, and community development.
